INFLATION JUST HIT A 3-YEAR HIGH.
And the Fed Has No Room to Cut.
May CPI came in at 4.2%, the hottest annual reading since April 2023 and the third straight month of acceleration. With energy driving the spike, the Fed has little room to move when it meets next week. For owners carrying variable-rate debt, the wait gets longer.

Every month brings a fresh batch of economic data, and every month small business owners are told the same thing: it’s complicated. So let’s make it simple. The Bureau of Labor Statistics put May’s Consumer Price Index at 4.2% year over year, the hottest annual pace since April 2023 and the third straight month of acceleration. As long as inflation runs this hot, the Fed will not cut. And as long as the Fed holds, businesses carrying variable-rate debt keep paying. 4.2% Annual CPI for May, the highest reading since April 2023 and the third straight month of accelerating inflation. Energy alone accounted for more than 60% of the monthly increase. 📈 Inflation Has Turned Back Up Headline prices rose 0.5% on the month. Strip out food and energy and core inflation sat at 2.9%, which tells you the underlying trend is calmer than the headline. The trouble is that small businesses do not run on core inflation. They run on the pump, the thermostat, and the invoice. When the volatile categories move, Main Street feels it first. ⛽ Energy Is the Engine, and It Touches Everything The conflict with Iran has pushed energy costs up 23.5% over the year, with gasoline up roughly 40.5%. Energy accounted for more than 60% of May’s entire monthly price increase, a single category dragging the whole index higher. That hit does not stop at the pump. Higher fuel prices pass straight through to freight, shipping rates, raw materials, food costs, last-mile delivery, and the wage pressure that follows when employees can no longer afford their commute. Every line item on a small business P&L moves with the price of crude. 📊 What the NFIB Data Says Owners are feeling it. The NFIB Small Business Optimism Index fell 0.6 points in May to 95.3, its weakest level since October 2024 and the third straight month below its 52-year average of 98. The numbers behind the headline are starker:

Request a Confidential Consultation →💳 Debt Is the Quiet Pressure With inflation running hot, the Fed has no room to cut when it meets June 16 and 17, and new Chair Kevin Warsh inherits a divided committee with every reason to sit still. The target range stays at 3.50% to 3.75%, where it has held since the cuts late last year. Short-term rates on credit cards and other products that track the federal funds rate stay elevated. Owners who stacked working capital lines, SBA variable-rate notes, and merchant cash advances during the cheap-money years are now servicing that debt against thinner margins and softer sales. That is the textbook setup for distress. The businesses that come through this stretch will be the ones that act early, before the bank calls the note. 🛡️ What Smart SMB Owners Are Doing Right Now
💬 How Valcor Helps
The Fed’s pause is not neutral for businesses already running tight. Every month rates stay elevated is another month of margin compression and narrowing options. Panic has never balanced a P&L, but neither has waiting. The owners who make it through a squeeze are rarely the ones hoping the macro picture turns. They are the ones who fix their own math first.
