SMALL BUSINESS ECONOMY UPDATE:
Pressure Is Building.
The U.S. economy keeps expanding, but rising costs, tariffs, thinner margins, and expensive credit are squeezing small businesses. For owners already short on cash or carrying heavy debt, that pressure can threaten an otherwise healthy company.

As we celebrate America’s semiquincentennial anniversary, we also salute small businesses that formed the backbone of America for 250 years. The U.S. economy continues to expand, but many small businesses are being squeezed by rising costs, tariffs, reduced margins, and expensive credit. For owners already dealing with cash-flow problems or carrying substantial debt, these pressures can quickly threaten an otherwise viable company. 16% Share of small-business owners planning capital expenditures over the next six months, the lowest reading since March 2009. Owners are pulling back as costs, tariffs, and uncertainty climb. 📈 Inflation and Borrowing Costs Remain High Consumer prices increased 4.2% during the 12 months ending in May, up from 3.8% in April. Energy prices rose 23.5%, while core inflation, excluding food and energy, increased 2.9%. The Federal Reserve also held its federal funds target range at 3.5% to 3.75% in June. Business loans, credit lines, and refinancing therefore remain relatively expensive, particularly for companies whose financial condition has already weakened. 🌐 Tariffs and Trade Are Affecting Business Costs A temporary 10% import surcharge currently applies to many products entering the United States. Separate tariffs and product-specific duties may also affect imported materials, components, machinery, and finished goods. These policies may create opportunities for some domestic producers. But manufacturers, distributors, contractors, and retailers that depend on imported goods can face higher costs before they have time to raise prices or find alternative suppliers. The broader trade picture is mixed. U.S. exports reached a record $327.1 billion in April, but the advance estimate for May showed the goods trade deficit widening 27.4% to $105.8 billion. 📊 Small-Business Confidence Has Declined The NFIB Small Business Optimism Index fell to 95.3 in May, below its 52-year average of 98. The Uncertainty Index rose to 91, compared with a historical average of 68.

It has loyal customers, experienced employees, and a healthy order book. Over the past year, its material, freight, insurance, and labor costs all increased. Several major customers began taking 60 to 90 days to pay, while the company still had to meet weekly payroll and supplier obligations. The owner used credit cards and short-term business loans to cover the timing gap. Debt payments rose just as gross margins declined. The company stayed busy and looked profitable on paper, but it was no longer generating enough cash to meet every obligation on time. This representative situation reflects what many established businesses are facing. The underlying company may still be viable, but its cash-flow cycle and debt structure have become unsustainable. Businesses particularly vulnerable to these pressures include:
🛡️ The Time to Act Is Now Short-term cash-flow problems can quickly become creditor pressure, lawsuits, disrupted operations, or an inability to meet payroll.
